Monetary policy tasks are those most directly related to the notion of central banking. Since the Bank of Italy became a member of the European System of Central Banks (ESCB), its role in defending monetary stability has been set in the European institutional framework. The Bank contributes to formulating monetary policy for the entire euro area through the Governor’s participation in the Governing Council of the European Central Bank (ECB). It implements the Governing Council’s decisions in Italy, in accordance with the principles of decentralization and subsidiarity laid down at European level. Representatives of the Bank also participate in the numerous committees and working groups set up within the European System of Central Banks to study questions relating to the System’s institutional tasks.
